History
Cherilyn Sarkisian was recording with Sonny Bono by 1965, and I Got You Babe made the pair famous before she turned twenty. What followed has almost no shape to it: variety television through the 1970s, an Academy Award for Moonstruck in 1987, hard rock singles in the same decade. Then Believe in 1998. Its producers ran her vocal through pitch correction set to snap rather than glide, and instead of hiding the artefact they made it the hook. Engineers credited a vocoder pedal for a while and kept the real method quiet. The single topped the American chart, spent weeks at number one in Britain, sold somewhere in the region of eleven million and won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording. Every hard-tuned vocal since owes it something. The album of the same name pushed her into Eurohouse tempos she has returned to more than once.
