History
Sofi Tukker are Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, a New York duo whose house music keeps one foot in Brazil. Their early records set Portuguese lyrics, several of them taken from poetry rather than written as pop, over deep house drums and a bright nylon-string guitar, and Drinkee made that combination work on dancefloors that did not understand a word of it. Best Friend went much further, pushed into the mainstream by an advertising campaign and then living on as a festival and playlist staple. Purple Hat shows the sillier side of the project, a sing-along built on repetition and a joke that refuses to explain itself. Live they play rather than DJ, with guitars, drum pads and an elaborate stage setup that turns the set into a performance. A listener recognises them by the texture: percussive acoustic guitar, tribal-leaning drums, two voices trading phrases in Portuguese and English inside the same song.
