History
Clean Bandit are an English electronic music group formed in Cambridge in 2008. Grace Chatto and Jack Patterson met as undergraduates at Jesus College, University of Cambridge; Jack began sampling recordings of Chatto's classical string quartet, then recruited his younger brother Luke Patterson on drums. Violinist Neil Amin-Smith joined the lineup and remained until his departure in 2016. The band is instrumental, blending classical arrangements with dance and electronic production, and built its catalogue around rotating guest vocalists rather than a fixed singer. Their breakthrough single "Rather Be" (2014), featuring Jess Glynne, topped the UK chart, reached the US top ten, and won the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Later hits "Rockabye" (2016, with Sean Paul and Anne-Marie) became the UK's Christmas number one, while "Symphony" (2017, with Zara Larsson) and "Solo" (2018, with Demi Lovato) also reached number one in the UK. Albums include New Eyes (2014) and What Is Love? (2018). One quirky fact: the band's name derives from a Russian phrase Patterson has described as roughly meaning "utter rascal."
