History

Bones built one of the defining sounds of underground internet rap: slow, murky beats, heavy low end, washed-out samples and a detached, often mumbled delivery that sits somewhere between cloud rap and horror-tinged trap. From Howell, Michigan, he began releasing music online in the early 2010s and worked outside the label system, putting out an enormous, fast-moving catalogue of mixtapes directly on YouTube, SoundCloud and Bandcamp. Around him grew TeamSESH, a collective of producers, rappers and visual artists who shaped the grainy, lo-fi look of his videos as much as the music itself. He also formed the group Seshollowaterboyz with Xavier Wulf, Chris Travis and Eddy Baker. Garbage, from 2014, and Unrendered, from 2017, are among the tapes most often cited from a discography that runs to dozens of releases. His refusal to sign, his volume of output and his bleak, self-contained aesthetic influenced a wave of later SoundCloud rappers. His music is recognised by its hazy production, sparse hi-hats, distorted bass, whispered hooks and a mood of numb late-night isolation.
