History
Xavier Wulf built his sound on the murky, lo-fi side of internet rap: hazy cloud beats, rattling Memphis-style drums and a calm, half-mumbled flow that can suddenly snap into rapid-fire bars. He came out of Memphis, Tennessee, and first drew attention under the name Ethelwulf as part of Raider Klan, the SpaceGhostPurrp collective that revived the dark tape sound of 1990s Memphis rap for a new online generation. After leaving that circle he recorded as Xavier Wulf and became closely tied to the Seshollowaterboyz alliance with Bones, Chris Travis and Eddy Baker, a loose crew that released music straight to fans through free downloads and streaming uploads. His own Hollow Squad banner, a steady flow of mixtapes and a devoted underground following kept him outside the major-label path. Anime is a constant thread in his lyrics, artwork and persona, and snowboarding and Japanese imagery turn up just as often. A listener recognises him by the cold, echo-heavy production, the unhurried drawl and the mix of Memphis grit with dreamy cloud-rap haze.
