History

Black Kray, born Timothy O'Neal Mills in Richmond, Virginia, and raised in nearby Ashland, is one of the rappers who carried witch house out of synth music and into underground rap. His tracks pair drowsy, half-sung flows with cloudy, reverb-soaked beats, eerie samples and trap drums, a mix critics tied to cloud rap and early emo rap as much as to the dark electronic scene he borrowed from. An early member of Raider Klan, he became a founding member of Goth Money Records, the collective that pushed this sound in the early 2010s. The mixtape Crack Cloud$ Over Art$$ Kitchen, released in 2012, and the Goth Money project Back to the Witchhouse made the connection explicit, and 700 Dagreez and City of Doves followed in 2014. He later adopted the name Sickboyrari, recorded with Drain Gang and Working on Dying, and helped shape the tread style. His influence runs forward to younger artists such as Sematary, who name him as a starting point. What marks him out is that mix of menace and sadness, gun talk delivered in a voice that sounds close to tears.
