History

Main Attrakionz made hazy, drifting hip-hop over airy synth pads and loose, blurred drums, and they are counted among the acts that gave cloud rap its shape and its name. The duo, Mondre M.A.N. and Squadda B, came from Oakland, California, and had known each other since middle school. From 2009 they released a flood of mixtapes, including the 808s & Dark Grapes series, sharing the same online, self-released circuit as Lil B and early A$AP Rocky and working with producers such as Clams Casino and the Friendzone duo. One of the two later said that the term cloud rap was simply a name given to them. Their first proper album, Bossalinis & Fooliyones (2012), drew praise from critics for its musicianship and originality, and 808s & Dark Grapes III (2015) closed the series. The sound to listen for is dreamy, echoing beats, relaxed and conversational verses about Oakland life, and the soft, washed-out atmosphere that became the template for a wave of internet rap.
