History

Bon Jovi formed in Sayreville, New Jersey, in 1983, built around singer Jon Bon Jovi after his song "Runaway" caught on with local radio listeners. The classic lineup came together that year: Jon Bon Jovi (vocals), David Bryan (keyboards), Richie Sambora (guitar), Alec John Such (bass), and Tico Torres (drums). Their self-titled debut arrived in 1984 on Mercury Records, but it was Slippery When Wet (1986) and New Jersey (1988) that turned them into arena-rock superstars, driven by hits like "You Give Love a Bad Name," "Livin' on a Prayer," and "Wanted Dead or Alive." The band's sound blends hard rock, glam metal, and pop rock hooks. Such left in 1994 and was eventually replaced by Hugh McDonald; Sambora departed in 2013, with Phil X taking over guitar duties from 2016. Bon Jovi has sold more than 130 million albums worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, after a fan vote that outpolled every other nominee that year by over 200,000 votes.
