History
Night Ranger is an American hard rock band from San Francisco, California, formed in 1982 by bassist-vocalist Jack Blades, drummer-vocalist Kelly Keagy, and guitarist Brad Gillis, veterans of the pop-funk group Rubicon. The trio, playing early San Francisco clubs first as Stereo and then as Ranger, added guitarist Jeff Watson and keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald before settling on the Night Ranger name after a trademark dispute with a country band called the Rangers. Blending arena rock, hard rock, and glam metal, the band is best known for the 1984 power ballad "Sister Christian," written and sung by Keagy for his younger sister Christine, which reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100. Other hits include "(You Can Still) Rock in America," "Don't Tell Me You Love Me," "When You Close Your Eyes," "Sentimental Street," and "Goodbye." Their first five albums sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Guitarist Brad Gillis briefly doubled as Ozzy Osbourne's touring guitarist in 1982, filling in after Randy Rhoads's death. The band split in 1989 and reunited in the 1990s, and continues to record and tour today.
