History

Gainesville, Florida is where this one starts, in 1976, after Petty's earlier group Mudcrutch fell apart and part of it regrouped under a new name. Mike Campbell played lead, Benmont Tench played organ and piano, and between them they shaped almost everything Petty wrote afterwards. Damn the Torpedoes (1979) is the breakthrough: Jimmy Iovine producing, "Refugee" and "Here Comes My Girl" built on a ringing 12-string Rickenbacker that points straight back at the Byrds while the rhythm section swings closer to the Rolling Stones. Full Moon Fever (1989) went out under Petty's name alone, made with Jeff Lynne, and produced "Free Fallin'" and "I Won't Back Down", though Campbell and Tench are all over it. In 1988 Petty also joined the Traveling Wilburys alongside Lynne, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan. He died in 2017. The sound to copy: chiming open chords, organ underneath, a plain nasal vocal, no ornament.
