History
Survivor is an American rock band formed in Chicago in 1978 by guitarist Frankie Sullivan and keyboardist-songwriter Jim Peterik, with Dave Bickler as lead singer. After two albums with modest chart success, the band's breakthrough came in 1982 when Sylvester Stallone asked them for a theme song for Rocky III. The result, "Eye of the Tiger," spent six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and received an Academy Award nomination. Bickler left in 1983 after vocal cord surgery and was replaced by Jimi Jamison, who fronted further hits including "High on You," "The Search Is Over," and the Rocky IV theme "Burning Heart." The band went through numerous breakups, lineup changes, and a trademark lawsuit between Sullivan and Jamison over the Survivor name. Jamison died in 2014; the band continued touring with various singers until 2020. A memorable trivia fact: a 2004 Starbucks commercial featuring a re-recorded "Eye of the Tiger" was nominated for an Emmy Award.
