History
Def Leppard formed in Sheffield, England, in 1977, evolving from an earlier band called Atomic Mass founded by school friends Rick Savage and Tony Kenning. The classic lineup crystallized around singer Joe Elliott, bassist Rick Savage, drummer Rick Allen, and guitarists Phil Collen and Steve Clark, building a melodic, radio-friendly strain of hard rock and heavy metal that helped define the early-1980s NWOBHM scene before crossing into pure arena rock. Working with producer Robert "Mutt" Lange, they broke through with Pyromania (1983) and then Hysteria (1987), the latter selling over 14 million copies on the strength of "Pour Some Sugar on Me," "Animal," and "Love Bites." The band's story is also one of remarkable resilience: drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a 1984 car crash yet returned to the kit using a custom electronic drum setup, and guitarist Steve Clark died in 1991, after which Vivian Campbell joined. Def Leppard has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
