History
Whitesnake is a British hard rock band formed in London in 1978 by singer David Coverdale, previously frontman of Deep Purple. Coverdale has been the only constant member across dozens of lineup changes; guitarists Bernie Marsden, Micky Moody, John Sykes, Adrian Vandenberg and Steve Vai, and drummer Ian Paice (also ex-Deep Purple) all passed through the ranks. Early albums such as Trouble (1978) and Ready an' Willing (1980) built a blues-rock following across the UK, Europe and Japan. Aiming at the American market, the band signed to Geffen Records and released the self-titled 1987 album (titled 1987 in the UK), which sold over eight million copies in the US. Its singles "Here I Go Again" and "Is This Love" reached number one and two on the Billboard Hot 100 - "Here I Go Again" was actually a re-recording of a song first released on 1982's Saints & Sinners. The videos starring actress Tawny Kitaen, who later became Coverdale's wife, made the band MTV fixtures. Whitesnake earned a Best British Group nomination at the 1988 Brit Awards; Coverdale announced his retirement in 2025.
