History
Battlecat (born Kevin Gilliam, April 20, 1968) is an American hip hop producer and DJ from South Los Angeles, California. He began as a battle DJ in the late 1980s, competing in the 1988 New Music Seminar DJ Battle for World Supremacy and the 1990 DMC US Mixing Finals in New York. His production style extended the early-1990s G-funk sound pioneered by Dr. Dre and Above the Law, built on thick synth bass lines, soulful keys and talk-box textures. He broke through producing Domino's 1993 hit "Getto Jam" and tracks on the gold-certified Bloods & Crips album "Bangin' on Wax." Through the 1990s and 2000s he worked closely with Snoop Dogg, also serving as his longtime concert DJ, and produced for Tupac Shakur, Nate Dogg, The Game, Xzibit, Tha Eastsidaz and R&B artists including Faith Evans, Brian McKnight, Tyrese and Jon B. An intended solo debut album, "Gumbo Roots," was recorded around 1995 but was shelved and has never been officially released.
