History

Buddy makes West Coast hip-hop that looks back to G-funk: warm synth leads, rubbery bass, laid-back grooves and a singer's ear for melody. Born Simmie Sims III and raised in Compton, he grew up on gospel and soul through his father, a preacher and choir director, and spent his childhood acting in stage musicals, which shows in how freely he moves between rapping, singing and performing. As a teenager he was introduced to Pharrell Williams, who signed him to his I Am Other collective, and early songs included "Staircases" with Kendrick Lamar. After the mixtape Idle Time he found his own footing with the EPs Magnolia and Ocean & Montana, the latter produced by Kaytranada. His debut album Harlan & Alondra, named after a Compton intersection, came out in 2018 and leaned into the sunny, bouncing sound of the neighbourhood, and Superghetto continued it in 2022. He is also a member of the collective Zoink Gang with JID, Smino and Guapdad 4000. Listeners know Buddy by his playful, sing-song flow, the funk-rooted production and a mood that stays upbeat even when the stories turn serious.
