History
Bastille are an English band formed in London in 2010, built around singer, songwriter and producer Dan Smith, whose solo project grew into a full group with keyboardist Kyle Simmons, bassist/guitarist Will Farquarson, and drummer Chris "Woody" Wood. The band's name nods to Bastille Day, 14 July, which is also Smith's birthday. Their sound blends indie pop and synth-driven rock with brooding, atmospheric production and lyrics often built around film references, history, and mythology. Their 2013 debut album, Bad Blood, went to number one in the UK and produced the single "Pompeii," which reached number two in the UK and the top five in the US and became one of Britain's best-selling songs of the streaming era, passing one million UK sales and two billion Spotify streams. Bastille won Best New Artist at the 2014 BRIT Awards. Later albums include Wild World (2016), Doom Days (2019), and Give Me the Future (2022), with the band continuing to tour and release new material.
