History
Ultravox were a British new wave band formed in London in April 1974, initially as Tiger Lily and briefly billed as "Ultravox!" from 1976. Frontman John Foxx led the group through three art-rock and early synth-pop albums before leaving for a solo career in 1979. Guitarist and singer Midge Ure then took over, and alongside keyboardist/violinist Billy Currie, bassist Chris Cross and drummer Warren Cann, steered Ultravox to its commercial peak: between 1980 and 1986 the band scored seven UK top ten albums and seventeen top 40 singles, driven by the synth-pop landmark "Vienna" (1981), "Dancing with Tears in My Eyes" and "Reap the Wild Wind". "Vienna" famously stalled at No. 2, kept off the top by Joe Dolce's novelty hit "Shaddap You Face". Ultravox split in 1987; a Currie-led lineup recorded two albums in the 1990s with little success, and the classic quartet reunited from 2008 to 2013, releasing the album Brilliant. Midge Ure also co-wrote and produced Band Aid's charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in 1984. Bassist Chris Cross died in March 2024.
