History

Liverpool produced the band in 1980 and Trevor Horn's ZTT label produced the records. Holly Johnson sang, Paul Rutherford danced and sang backing, and Mark O'Toole, Brian Nash and Peter Gill made up the rhythm section, though how much of them survived onto the finished singles has been argued about ever since. "Relax" crept out in late 1983, then Radio 1's Mike Read refused to play it, the BBC banned it, and the single went to number one and stayed on the chart for most of 1984. "Two Tribes" followed and held the top for nine weeks, with "Relax" sitting behind it at number two. "The Power of Love" made three consecutive number ones from three debut singles, a run matched only by Gerry and the Pacemakers. Paul Morley's marketing, "Frankie Say" T-shirts included, was part of the product. The double album Welcome to the Pleasuredome entered at number one in 1984. Liverpool arrived in 1986, and the band broke up the following year.
