History
Chvrches (styled CHVRCHΞS) are a Scottish synth-pop band from Glasgow, formed in September 2011. The trio consists of vocalist Lauren Mayberry and multi-instrumentalists Iain Cook and Martin Doherty, both veterans of the post-rock band Aereogramme. Cook and Doherty were experimenting with electronic soundscapes when they invited Mayberry, then a drummer and singer in the band Blue Sky Archives, to contribute vocals; she was soon promoted to lead singer after the group heard her voice. The band's sound blends synth-pop with electropop, indie pop, indietronica, and electronic rock. Their debut single "The Mother We Share" (2012) and the Recover EP (2013) built rapid online buzz, and the debut album The Bones of What You Believe (2013) landed the band at number five on the BBC's Sound of 2013 list. Later albums include Every Open Eye (2015), Love Is Dead (2018), and Screen Violence (2021). Notable trivia: the debut track "Lies" was posted online anonymously, illustrated with a photo of masked nuns rather than the members' faces, and shot to number one on the Hype Machine chart before anyone knew who was behind it.
