History
Rina Sawayama is a Japanese-British singer-songwriter born in Niigata, Japan, in 1990, who moved to London with her family at age five. She studied politics, psychology and sociology at Cambridge before pursuing music full time, debuting with the single "Sleeping in Waking" in 2013 and releasing her independent EP RINA in 2017. Her sound fuses pop, R&B, nu metal, rock and dance-pop, built around themes of identity, immigration, family and belonging. Signed to Dirty Hit, she released her debut album Sawayama in 2020, followed by Hold the Girl in 2022, and later acted in and contributed a song to John Wick: Chapter 4. A genuinely notable episode in her career: in 2020 she was ruled ineligible for the Mercury Prize and BRIT Awards because, despite living in the UK since childhood, she held only permanent residency rather than British citizenship. Her public campaign, backed by Elton John among others, led the BPI to change the eligibility rules in 2021 to include long-term UK residents.
