History
Years & Years were an English electropop band formed in London in 2010, when Australian-born Mikey Goldsworthy met Emre Turkmen and, soon after, singer Olly Alexander — reportedly recruited after Goldsworthy heard him singing in the shower. The lineup shrank from an original five-piece to a trio (Alexander, Goldsworthy, Turkmen) by 2013, the same year they signed to French label Kitsune before moving to Polydor Records in 2014. Their synth-pop sound broke through with the 2015 single "King," which topped the UK Singles Chart and reached the top ten in thirteen other countries. The follow-up debut album, Communion (2015), also hit UK number one and became the fastest-selling debut of the year by a UK-signed act — trivia: it was also the first release to top the charts on the day the global "New Music Fridays" release schedule launched. A second album, Palo Santo (2018), and collaborations with Pet Shop Boys and Kylie Minogue followed before the group became Alexander's solo vehicle in 2021; a third album, Night Call, hit UK number one in 2022, and the project formally disbanded by 2024.
