History
Basta, born Vasily Mikhailovich Vakulenko on April 20, 1980, in Rostov-on-Don, is one of Russia's most prominent rap artists, producers, and TV personalities. He started writing rap in his mid-teens and in 1997 joined the group Psycholyric, which was renamed Kasta in 1999 - early on he performed as Basta Khryu, later also becoming known under the alias Noggano. His 1998 solo debut "Moya Igra" ("My Game") built his reputation across southern Russia before he relocated to Moscow in 2004, where he connected with rappers Guf and Smoky Mo and joined the Gazgolder collective. His album series (Basta 1 through Basta 5) and joint records with Guf and Smoky Mo made him a mainstream fixture; the 2016 track "Sansara," featuring Diana Arbenina, Skriptonit, and other well-known Russian musicians, became one of his biggest hits. He also directed and starred in the film "Gazgolder" (2014) and served as a coach on the TV shows "The Voice" and "Voice of the Streets." In 2014 he became the first Russian artist to pass one million subscribers on VKontakte, and Forbes ranked him among Russia's highest-earning entertainers in 2020.
