History
Sergey Kruppov, from Ulan-Ude, records as ATL. The voice is the first thing anyone notices: a guttural rasp pushed low in the throat, closer to a throat-singing timbre than to standard rap delivery, and it cuts through any mix it is placed in. «Марабу» (2016) is the album that made him widely known, and the whole approach is there in full. The beats carry ethnic wind instruments and percussion alongside conventional drum programming, and the writing runs on esoteric and mystical imagery, birds, rituals, altered states, rather than on street reporting. The result belongs to Russian rap by form only; in texture it sits closer to ritual music.
