History

Arkona fuse black metal ferocity with Slavic folk: blast beats and harsh vocals set against wooden flutes, bagpipes, choirs and melodies that sound drawn from village songs. The band formed in Moscow in 2002, starting out under the name Hyperborea, and from the beginning it was led by vocalist and keyboardist Maria Arkhipova, known as Masha Scream, whose range from savage screams to clear folk singing became the band's signature. Their themes come from Russian folklore and Slavic paganism. The debut Vozrozhdeniye appeared in 2004, and after several albums with Sound Age they signed to the Austrian label Napalm Records in 2008, which carried them to festival stages across Europe. Goi, Rode, Goi! showed the band at its most expansive, while Yav in 2014 turned darker and heavier, closer to black metal, a direction continued on Khram. Arkona became one of the defining names of pagan metal from Russia, and their sound rests on that collision of folk instruments with raw, grim intensity.
