History
Apparat is the stage name of Sascha Ring, a German electronic musician born June 27, 1978, in Quedlinburg, East Germany, who moved to Berlin in 1997. Around 2000 he began co-running the Shitkatapult label with founder Marco Haas, releasing his debut Multifunktionsebene in 2001 and the abrasive IDM record Tttrial and Eror in 2002. From 2003's Duplex onward he moved away from pure dancefloor techno toward ambient textures, vocals, and orchestrated experimental pop, and he twice teamed with Ellen Allien, on Berlinette (2003) and Orchestra of Bubbles (2006). In 2009 he joined Modeselektor's Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary to form the supergroup Moderat, recording their self-titled debut at Berlin's Hansa Studios on the same vintage EMI console David Bowie used for Heroes; the trio has released four albums since. Ring also scores films, earning a David di Donatello award and a 2019 Grammy nomination for his soundtrack work with director Mario Martone.
