History
Amaarae, born Ama Serwah Genfi on July 4, 1994, in New York, is a Ghanaian-American singer and songwriter raised between Atlanta and Accra. She started writing songs at 13 and interned at a recording studio by 17, releasing her debut EP, Passionfruit Summers, in 2017 after moving back to Ghana. Her sound fuses pop, R&B, Afrobeats, and alte, delivered in a light, sweetly seductive falsetto. Her 2020 debut album, The Angel You Don't Know, was named Pitchfork's 19th-best album of 2020; its track "Sad Girlz Luv Money" went viral on TikTok, and a 2021 remix with Kali Uchis became a global hit. Her 2023 follow-up, Fountain Baby, made her the first Ghanaian artist to play NPR's Tiny Desk, and her 2025 album Black Star, co-produced with Kyu Steed and featuring baile funk influences from Brazil, drew acclaim. In April 2025 she became the first Ghanaian artist to headline a solo set at Coachella.
