History
Miguel Jontel Pimentel (born October 23, 1985) is an American singer-songwriter and producer from San Pedro, California, working in contemporary and alternative R&B. Raised by an African American mother and a Mexican-American father, he began writing songs at 14 and first broke through as a songwriter, notably co-writing Jaheim's Grammy-nominated "Finding My Way Back." A contract dispute delayed his own debut; All I Want Is You finally arrived in 2010, and its single "Sure Thing" went double platinum, then found a surprise second life as a Hot 100 hit via TikTok years later. His 2012 album Kaleidoscope Dream, led by the single "Adorn," debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and won him the 2013 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. He followed with the rock-inflected Wildheart (2015) and War & Leisure (2017), both Grammy-nominated, and has collaborated with Mariah Carey, A$AP Rocky, and Mac Miller. One memorable piece of trivia: during a 2013 Billboard Music Awards performance of "Adorn," Miguel attempted a stage leap that went wrong and injured two audience members, an incident nicknamed the "Miguel Leg Drop."
