History
Kelela Mizanekristos, known simply as Kelela, is an American singer and songwriter born June 4, 1983, in Washington, D.C., and raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland, in a second-generation Ethiopian American family. She emerged in the early 2010s after moving to Los Angeles and connecting with the Fade to Mind and Night Slugs labels. Her 2013 mixtape "Cut 4 Me," released for free, paired her voice with UK grime-influenced club production and helped revive the subgenre known as "rhythm & grime." She followed it with the "Hallucinogen" EP (2015) and her acclaimed debut album "Take Me Apart" (2017), later included in the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die." After a five-year gap she released "Raven" (2023) to near-universal critical acclaim, and a third album, "New Avatar," in July 2026, blending shoegaze guitars with electronic-leaning R&B. She has collaborated with Solange, Gorillaz, Danny Brown and PinkPantheress, and records for Warp.
