Melodic Black Metal

melancholicanthemictriumphant160–230 BPM

Melodic black metal from the 1990s: harmonized tremolo, melodic leads, blast beats, melancholic and anthemic in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

The melodic side of black metal took shape in Sweden in the early 1990s, in the style known as melodic black-death, when melodic death metal bands began to draw on black metal and on European romanticism. At the Gates and In Flames were already layering guitar melodies and harmonies over death metal's brutality, and Dissection, who came out of the same Gothenburg scene, built on that foundation but brought in black metal. Their 1993 debut The Somberlain helped create the melodic black-death sound and influenced a long line of later bands. Compared with most black metal, this branch keeps the tremolo picking and blast beats but puts melody and narrative in front, and reverb on the vocals is more common. Dissection belong to the Swedish contingent of black metal's second wave, which Norwegian bands such as Mayhem, Darkthrone and Emperor led at the start of the decade. Sacramentum continued Dissection's approach on Far Away from the Sun and The Coming of Chaos, with riffing in the middle of the neck and howling vocals, Vinterland leaned closer to Emperor, and Naglfar took a brighter, thrashier line modelled on In Flames. Skeletonwitch are also named among the bands that have played it.
