History

Naglfar play fast, melodic black metal in the Swedish tradition, with tremolo-picked lead lines that carry clear melodies, blast beats, and a cold, dramatic atmosphere. The band comes from Umeå in northern Sweden and takes its name from the ship of Norse myth said to be built from the nails of the dead. Their debut Vittra, released in 1995, placed them alongside Swedish acts such as Dissection and Dawn in the wave that fused black metal's speed and harshness with memorable, almost classical melodic writing. Diabolical, in 1998, made the sound tighter and more aggressive while keeping the melodic focus. Sheol, in 2003, continued that line with a heavier, more polished production. Vocalist Jens Rydén left the band in the mid-2000s, and bassist Kristoffer Olivius took over vocals on later albums. Naglfar have remained steady rather than experimental, refining one approach over many years. Listeners recognise them by the fast, flowing guitar melodies over relentless drumming, harsh shrieked vocals, and a grim but tuneful mood that sits between black and melodic death metal.
