History
Windir played black metal that sounded like it came out of a particular valley, and in a sense it did. The project grew around Valfar, a musician from Sogndal in western Norway, who wrote in the local Sogn dialect and drew his lyrics from the history and legends of the fjord districts around him. Where much Norwegian black metal of the nineties aimed for cold anonymity, Windir was rooted in place: tremolo riffs and harsh vocals carried folk melodies that could have been played on a fiddle, keyboards swelled underneath like a choir, and clean chanted passages broke through the blizzard of guitars. The albums Arntor, 1184 and Likferd show the sound widening from a raw one-man vision into a full band with a warmer, more melodic production, still built on long, marching songs and hooks that stay in the head. The story ended abruptly when Valfar died in a snowstorm in 2004, and the remaining members laid the name to rest. Windir is remembered as one of the clearest links between black metal and Norwegian folk tradition.
