History
Panopticon joins atmospheric black metal to American folk and bluegrass: blast beats and tremolo guitars sit beside banjo, fiddle and old protest songs, and the music is as much about landscape, labour and memory as about darkness. It is the one-man project of Austin Lunn, who started it in Louisville, Kentucky, and later moved to Minnesota, a shift that is audible in the music as it turned toward northern forests and winters. Kentucky, released in 2012, is the record that made his name: it tells the history of coal mining and union struggle in Appalachia, and folds traditional material such as the labour song Which Side Are You On? into long black metal pieces. Roads to the North and Autumn Eternal carried the approach north, with more post-rock and atmospheric texture and a closer focus on nature and seasons. Lunn plays and writes nearly everything himself, which gives the records a personal, handmade feel. A listener recognises Panopticon by the meeting of harsh, blasting passages with acoustic Appalachian instruments, long builds, and music that feels tied to a particular stretch of land.
