History
Kampfar play black metal rooted in Norwegian folklore, with galloping tremolo riffs, rough shrieked vocals and melodies that sound like old folk tunes pushed through a storm. The band formed in Norway in the mid-1990s around vocalist Dolk, arriving just after the country's first black metal wave and choosing a different focus: instead of Satanic imagery, the songs turned to Norse myth, nature and rural tradition, sung in Norwegian. The debut album Mellom skogkledde aaser from 1997 set the template, with long pieces that move between cold aggression and slower, almost hymn-like passages. After a quieter period the band returned strongly in the 2000s with Kvass in 2006 and Heimgang in 2008, records that tightened the riffing and gave the choruses more weight without losing the folk character. Later albums pushed toward a darker, heavier sound, but the core stayed the same. Kampfar are often named among the main acts of pagan black metal in Norway. A listener would recognise them by Dolk's hoarse, theatrical delivery and the sense of a folk melody hidden inside the blast.
