History
Florida death metal is the regional scene that made Tampa known among fans as the capital of death metal. It came together between the mid-1980s and early 1990s around Death, Morbid Angel, Deicide and Obituary, while producer Scott Burns and the Morrisound Recording studio turned the raw sound of the early bands into something thicker and more brutal. Bands from outside the state followed: Cannibal Corpse moved from Buffalo, New York, to Tampa in 1990. Machine-gun blast beats under low, nearly unintelligible growls helped split death metal off from its thrash roots. Florida guitars were tuned less low than elsewhere and played tighter, stacking riffs in jarring order: Obituary's "Deadly Intentions" (1989) runs through six riffs at shifting tempos with no verse or chorus at all. Burns mixed for the instruments, so the voice worked almost as percussion, and Obituary's John Tardy admitted he sometimes sang sounds that were not words. Death's Human (1991), made with two members of Cynic, brought jazz-influenced guitar and polyrhythmic drumming, and Atheist and Cynic moved on into progressive death metal. The genre slumped in the second half of the 1990s, but the Florida scene held on and later came back.
