History

In Flames are one of the Gothenburg bands that made death metal melodic without softening the rhythm section. The method is easy to describe and hard to play: keep the growled vocal and the double kick drumming of death metal, then write the guitars as harmonised twin leads borrowed from traditional heavy metal and, further back, from Swedish folk melody. Acoustic passages sit between the heavy sections rather than after them. Colony and Clayman are where the formula is at its most concentrated, and Only for the Weak is the track most often used to explain the whole subgenre to someone hearing it for the first time. From the early 2000s the band moved deliberately towards clean singing, larger choruses and a modern alternative metal production, a shift that split the audience and is still argued over. What holds across both periods is the lead guitar writing: melodies you could hum unaccompanied, played over material that is anything but.
