History
Latin pop is pop sung in Spanish or Portuguese: international song structure, hooks and electric instruments, seasoned with rhythms from Latin American and Iberian traditions. It first reached a global audience in the mid-1960s through bandleader Sergio Mendes, and in the 1970s it was defined by the romantic ballads of Julio Iglesias and Roberto Carlos. Much of its modern sound was assembled in the United States. Tejano musicians in Texas brought synthesizers and slicker production to border styles, and the club scenes of New York and Miami produced Latin freestyle on drum machines. Gloria Estefan became the first major crossover star, and Tejano singer Selena reached number one only posthumously, when her album Dreaming of You debuted at the top of the chart in 1995. The real breakthrough came in the late 1990s. Ricky Martin, called the King of Latin Pop, sang "La Copa de la Vida", the anthem of the 1998 World Cup in France, and Shakira and Enrique Iglesias followed him into the mainstream. The traffic ran both ways, with English-language stars such as Christina Aguilera recording Spanish versions of their songs.
