Filipino pop from the 2000s: grand piano, acoustic guitar, string section, warm and melancholic in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

OPM pop, or Pinoy pop, grew out of the Philippine ballad tradition of the 1960s, when Pilita Corrales and Nora Aunor sang sentimental ballads. In the early 1970s Manila sound ruled with Hotdog and Sampaguita, and by the end of the decade acts such as VST & Company copied the stage look and sound of the Bee Gees and Village People. The term Original Pilipino Music, coined by Danny Javier of Apo Hiking Society, took hold in the mid-1970s for the ballads that replaced Manila sound, sung by Freddie Aguilar, Basil Valdez and a teenage Sharon Cuneta. By 1977 every station had to play a Filipino song each hour, rising to three an hour in 1987, and Aguilar's Anak, a winner at the first Metropop Festival, became an international hit. The 1980s were the ballad's golden age, with Martin Nievera, Lea Salonga and Gary Valenciano. In the 1990s Eraserheads turned the scene toward pop-rock while a new generation of balladeers such as Regine Velasquez arrived, and from 2010 the sound moved toward Asian-style ballads, idol groups and EDM. In 2010 Charice, now Jake Zyrus, became the first Asian to reach the top ten of the Billboard 200.
