History
Alejandro Sanz writes Spanish pop with flamenco in its bones. He came up in Madrid with a family background in Andalusia, learned guitar in that tradition, and his songs keep its fingerprints: compás that pushes against the beat, melodies that bend around a syllable instead of landing on it, and a hoarse, grainy voice that sounds close to breaking at the top of a phrase. The arrangements are modern pop, piano and full band, but the phrasing underneath is rhythmically free in a way straight pop is not, and he stretches a line until the words run out. "Corazon Partio" is the song that made him a household name across the Spanish-speaking world, and "Amiga Mia" and "Y, Si Fuera Ella?" are the ballads that show how much he can do with restraint. He has since won more Latin Grammys than any other male artist, and he works constantly with singers from outside his own tradition without losing the accent in his phrasing.
