History
Dominican dembow comes from the Dominican Republic and is usually described as an offshoot of reggaeton, which itself grew out of dancehall. The core is the dembow rhythm played faster than in standard reggaeton, and the name goes back to Shabba Ranks' song "Dem Bow", later remixed by Wisin & Yandel among many others, and the beat became a staple of reggaeton. The Dominican scene split off in the 2000s. Puerto Rican reggaeton was turning melodic, polished and romantic, and that softening pushed the Dominican scene to the margins, where it kept a raw, unembellished and aggressive sound. The push to faster tempos may also owe something to the country's old preference for fast merengue. In the 2010s trap began to shape the production, and the rising global appetite for Spanish-language music carried dembow to Spain, the United States, Chile and Italy. Its performers are called dembowseros, and the best known include Tokischa, Chimbala, El Alfa, Jey One and Rochy RD. Artists from other countries have tried it too: Bad Bunny had hits in the style with "Tití Me Preguntó" and "NUEVAYoL".
