History
Deconstructed club grew out of GHE20G0TH1K, a run of New York parties that began in 2009 in Brooklyn and Manhattan warehouses, where voguers, punks and fashionistas danced to DJs splicing Jersey club, Baltimore club, footwork, grime and ballroom with house and techno. The MP3s played there had a crunchy, cruddy texture on a big sound system, and that grit became the aesthetic. The music breaks the club's contract: no steady four-on-the-floor, no stable tempo, no build-up and drop. In their place come metallic, staccato hits, samples of smashing glass and gunshots, Jersey club kick patterns, grime claps and jittery footwork programming. Jam City's Classical Curves (2012) was an early inspiration, and Sophie's work fed into the pop of Charli XCX. In Latin America the style took in reggaeton, baile funk and dembow: KLK by Arca with Rosalía carries a dembow pulse. Simon Reynolds called the whole thing conceptronica and set it against 1990s IDM, finding Aphex Twin and Luke Vibert earthier and funnier. Its roots in vogue and queer nightlife remain part of its identity, and the label PAN even opened an imprint, Entopia, for art installation and fashion show soundtracks.
