Style recipe for Suno v5
Nu-Gaze
Modern shoegaze from the 2010s: distorted guitar, reverb guitar, synth pads, dreamy and shimmering in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Nu gaze was the second wave of shoegaze, an international revival that took shape around 2000 with England's My Vitriol, Sweden's the Radio Dept. and France's M83. It kept the layers of distortion but played faster, mixed the vocals higher and cleaned up the production, borrowing freely from electronic music. My Vitriol's singer Som Wardner was already calling his band nu-gaze in 2001, the year their debut Finelines came out and its single "Always: Your Way" reached the UK top 40. A film sped the revival up: Sofia Coppola's 2003 film Lost in Translation, whose soundtrack was curated by Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine. After it came wider attention for Deerhunter, Maps and Asobi Seksu. By 2013 the wave had faded, replaced by a separate revival around DIIV and Wild Nothing. Then the word changed meaning. In 2023, users on Reddit and 4chan started applying nu-gaze to a fusion of nu metal and shoegaze that largely descends from Deftones, played by Narrow Head, Wisp, Loathe and Fleshwater. The spelling now tells the two apart: nu gaze without a hyphen is the 2000s wave, nu-gaze with one is the nu metal hybrid.
