History

Traitors play a slow, sludge-heavy strain of deathcore built almost entirely around the breakdown. The band comes from Florida and belongs to the 2010s wave sometimes nicknamed sludgewave, where acts such as Black Tongue and Immoralist dragged deathcore down to a crawl and made weight the whole point. Their songs are short and blunt: detuned chugs, long pauses that make each hit land harder, and bellowed vocals about anger, regret and mental strain rather than fantasy or gore. Records such as Mental State, Anger Issues and Repent keep to one formula, mixing the lurching downtempo pace with the bounce and hostility of beatdown hardcore, and even their titles give a fair idea of the mood. What a listener recognises in Traitors is the physical quality of the music: low end that feels like pressure more than pitch, riffs designed for the pit, and a bleak, personal tone that stays closer to hardcore than to technical death metal.
