History

Distant play deathcore at its slowest and heaviest: down-tuned riffs that crawl instead of charge, breakdowns stretched until they feel like collapsing masonry, and low guttural vocals that sit almost inside the guitars. The band formed in 2014 with roots split between Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Bratislava in Slovakia, a cross-border line-up in a genre usually tied to one local scene. Their early records came out on Unique Leader, the American label with a long history in brutal extreme metal, and the releases Tyrannotophia (2019) and Aeons of Oblivion (2021) made them one of the best known names of the downtempo wave. Heritage followed in 2023, after they moved to Century Media, and Tsukuyomi: The Origin in 2024 brought in guests from Despised Icon, Trivium, Signs of the Swarm and Enterprise Earth. Alan Grnja fronts the band. Listeners recognise Distant by the mass of the sound: dense low end, dissonant leads floating over it, and a pace that makes every drop land like a weight.
