History
Suicide Silence came out of Riverside, California, in the early 2000s and became one of the bands that carried deathcore to a wide audience. Their sound joined death metal riffing and blast beats to hardcore breakdowns, with a bounce that owed something to nu metal. Frontman Mitch Lucker, heavily tattooed and switching between high shrieks and low roars, was the face of the band. The Cleansing in 2007 established them, No Time to Bleed in 2009 tightened the attack, and The Black Crown in 2011 pushed the groove further, with 'You Only Live Once' becoming one of their best-known songs. Lucker died in a motorcycle accident in 2012, and the band continued with Eddie Hermida, formerly of All Shall Perish. In 2017 a self-titled album leaned into clean singing and a looser nu metal feel, which divided fans sharply. Listeners recognise the classic records by their bouncing breakdowns, dense low tuning and Lucker's raw, shouted phrasing, which remains the benchmark the band is measured against.
