History

Emmure are one of the bands most associated with the meeting of deathcore and nu metal: sparse, down-tuned riffs, dissonant chords, huge breakdowns and a vocal style that jumps between growls, shrieks and rapping. The group formed in 2003 in New Fairfield, Connecticut, later based itself in Queens, New York, and has always been driven by vocalist Frankie Palmeri. Goodbye to the Gallows in 2007 opened a long run on Victory Records, followed by The Respect Issue, Felony, Speaker of the Dead, Slave to the Game and Eternal Enemies. Where many deathcore bands chased speed and technicality, Emmure stripped riffs down to single-note chugs and heavy pauses, a clear nod to Korn-era nu metal, which drew both devoted fans and loud criticism. Palmeri's lyrics mix breakups and anger with references to video games, Street Fighter and Marvel comics. At the end of 2015 every member except Palmeri left, and a rebuilt lineup released Look at Yourself on SharpTone in 2017 and Hindsight in 2020. The sound is recognisable at once by its bounce, its silence between hits and its bluntness.
