History

Within the Ruins are a guitar-driven band first and a deathcore band second. Coming out of Westfield, Massachusetts, in the late 2000s, they built their sound on tight, heavily syncopated riffing, technical lead work and breakdowns that grow out of the riffs rather than simply interrupting them. Guitarist Joe Cocchi's playing, full of fast melodic runs and flashy solos, became the band's signature, and their recurring instrumental tracks titled Ataxia gave the guitars room to carry whole songs without vocals. Creature in 2009 introduced the band, Invade in 2010 broadened its audience, and Elite in 2013 brought sharper songwriting and a more polished production while keeping the aggression. They sit in the part of technical deathcore that leans toward metalcore groove and melodic death metal. The band went through vocalist changes over the years, but the instrumental core kept the sound recognisable. A listener identifies Within the Ruins by stop-start riffs with a strong bounce, bright lead guitar lines over heavy rhythm parts, and the purely instrumental Ataxia pieces.
