History

Soilwork play a hook-heavy, groove-driven melodic death metal in which thrash-sharp riffs sit under choruses big enough for a rock radio station. The band formed in Helsingborg, in the south of Sweden, in the mid 1990s, and from the start its focal point was singer Björn Strid, known as Speed, who switches between a raw scream and a strong, melodic clean voice. Early albums leaned on speed and Gothenburg-style guitar harmonies, but by Natural Born Chaos, produced by Devin Townsend, the sound had opened up into tighter grooves, synth layers and soaring refrains. Stabbing the Drama pushed the same mix of pummelling rhythm and catchiness further. That blend was widely imitated by the American metalcore bands of the 2000s, which makes Soilwork one of the quieter influences on that wave. The Living Infinite, a double album, showed the band at its most ambitious, with orchestral touches and more varied songwriting. A listener knows Soilwork by the scream-to-chorus lift, the chugging groove riffs and Strid's instantly recognisable melodic lines.
