History
Disturbed came out of Chicago at the turn of the 2000s with a sound tighter and more percussive than most of the nu metal around them: down-tuned riffs cut into short blocks, drums mixed close to a machine, and David Draiman's voice barking on the beat rather than over it. Down with the Sickness is the track that made them, less for its riff than for the stuttered non-verbal vocal hook, a noise an arena can shout back without learning a word. Stricken shows the other half of the band, where the same rhythmic attack carries a real melody and a chorus built to be sung. The break in pattern was their cover of The Sound of Silence, arranged for piano and strings and delivered straight, which reached an audience well outside metal and proved the singer could hold a line without force. Five albums in a row went to number one in the United States, a run that says how steady the formula is: heavy, legible, and never so extreme that the chorus disappears under it.
