History

Intestine Baalism play melodic death metal with a hard, old-school edge: twin guitar harmonies and memorable leads sit on top of riffs that still owe a clear debt to thrash and to the rawer death metal of the early 1990s. The band comes from Tokyo, where it started in 1991 as the thrash group Euthanasia before taking its current name in 1994. A demo, "The Energumenus", appeared in 1995, followed by the albums "An Anatomy of the Beast" (1997), "Banquet in the Darkness" (2003) and "Ultimate Instinct" (2008), with Repulse and Blackend among their labels. Reviewers have compared them with At the Gates, Carcass, Dismember and Morpheus Descends, which gives a fair idea of the balance: plenty of melody, but no gloss. The line-up has centred on Seiji Kakuzaki and Kenji Nonaka, who share vocals and guitar. In the Japanese scene they stand as one of the early bands to take the melodic death metal template seriously. Their calling cards are sharp, singing lead lines, a grim atmosphere and a pace that rarely lets up.
