History
Sandra Ann Lauer, known mononymously as Sandra, is a German pop singer born on 18 May 1962 in Saarbrucken, West Germany. Before going solo she was lead singer of the all-female disco trio Arabesque, popular in Japan and the Soviet Union, where she met keyboardist Michael Cretu, who became her producer and, later, husband. She launched her solo career in 1984 with a German-language cover of Alphaville's "Big in Japan," then broke through internationally in 1985 with "(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena" from her debut album The Long Play. The single topped charts in 21 countries, reached the top ten in five more, and earned her a 1986 Grammy nomination, making it her signature song. Further hits followed through the early 1990s, including "In the Heat of the Night," "Everlasting Love," "Secret Land," "Hiroshima," and "Don't Be Aggressive." From 1990 to 2003 she also lent vocals to Cretu's project Enigma. She remains one of Continental Europe's best-selling pop singers of the 1980s.
